MINUTES: GDCCC GENERAL BOARD MEETING

DATE: February 1, 2001

MEETING PLACE: MOODY-WILLIAMS PRINTING COMPANY

The President, Bill Buchanan, called the meeting to order at 7:35 p.m. There were 4 officers, 5 directors and 13 delegates present (4 of those 13 delegates were also officers or directors).

Handouts:

·         Treasurer's Report

Officer's Report:

·         Secretary: The minutes from the 11/26/00 meeting were reviewed and approved.

·         Treasurer: The Treasurer's Report was reviewed and approved.

Director's Reports:

·         Print: Judy Yaker and Jim Campbell have volunteered to be the new Print Directors. Next competition is March 26 at Photo Guild.

·         Color Slide: No report. Next competition is Thursday, February 15 at Avon.

·         Nature Slide: The first competition was held Tuesday, January 23 at Grosse Pointe. Results are on the web site. Next competition is February 22 at West Oakland. Skip reported that some winning entries were not included in the year end competition because directors failed to turn them in. It is the club director's responsibility to collect and enter them. Other divisions reported the same problem.

·         2¼ Slide: Next competition is Thursday, February 15 at Avon.

·         Digital: Digital print competition is held with Print Division competitions. Next competition is March 26 at Photo Guild. Digital slide competition is held in conjunction with color slides. Next digital slide competition is February 15 at Avon. Judy Yaker is Director for both divisions.

·         Newsletter: The next issue will be started in the next two weeks. There was discussion about changing the newsletter due to reduced subscription renewal and availability of information on the web site. Suggestions included reducing content to fit in 3 two-sided pages to reduce cost, including only competition results and coming events, having club presidents poll their clubs to find out what members would like to see and how many desire a hard copy as opposed to web information. Clubs are to compile updated e-mail address lists for members so they can be added to council updates/web newsletter notices. The newsletter will be continued for 2001 with the need for hard copy/cost for subscription reevaluated toward the end of the year.

·         Web Site: Text scores from year end have been entered. Links to winning photos will be added this weekend. Bill Buchanan brought a copy of the January 2001 PSA Journal, which had an article about the GDCCC web site. There is also a PSA Web Site Competition we will enter.

·         International Salon Competition: PSA applications have been sent by e-mail and regular mail. Medal sponsorship has been arranged. Judy has typed the entry forms, which are available on the web site. The competition should be listed in the April PSA Journal.

Old Business:

·         Banquet 2001: There has been difficulty getting the floating trophies back in time. It was suggested that reminder post-cards be made up for recipients and sent to them in October to help eliminate the delay. Another option is to have the director of the division for the winner's club be sure to get the trophy and bring it to the last competition of the year. All receipts have been turned over to Loretta. There were 138 people in attendance. The door prize drawing and distribution was discussed. It worked well to draw names and match to prizes in advance; the break to set up the projector was a good time for winners to pick up prizes. Presentation of trophies and photos of winners procedures was also discussed. It was suggested that photos be taken after each division or at the end of the entire presentation to eliminate the need to have lights on and off and interruption of the flow of the slides. Banquet 2002 will be hosted by Livonia. Skip suggested a more central location. Livonia is looking for a location between 96 and Telegraph that would allow either a cash bar or BYO. Target date is January 26, 2002.

·         2001 Slide Invitational: Deadline for entry is February 19, 2001 with judging to follow at 7:30 p.m. Monday, February 26, 2001 at Photo Guild. There are only 6 entries so far.

·         Competition Dates: Dates are published in the 2001 Competition Schedule book and are correct as listed.

·         Rule Clarification: Discussion about what qualifies as nature slide vs. color slide revealed some misunderstanding of the definition of color slide. Copies of the GDCCC Constitution were made available.

·         NANPA Project: The two Detroit area students, Nicole Brown and Justin Wright, did receive some support. They each presented their slides at the NANPA Summit and are supposed to share them with area clubs in the future.

·         Darrell Gulin: Darrell will do a program for us sometime in the spring of 2002. He is attempting to get sponsorship from Kodak and Canon. Possible date is the weekend before Memorial Day, 2002.

New Business:

·         Council Promotion: Jonathan Warren (Livonia) presented an idea for council to sponsor a gallery show to promote photography in the area. Livonia club has participated in area shows and has gained 5 new members in 6 months. A council show would gain visibility in the general public and is a possible source for new members. Jonathan suggested using either year-end winners or have each club submit juried entries. Support was high for the idea. Club presidents are to talk to their membership about finding a venue to display prints and ask for participation in the project.

·         Adray Show: Date is not yet known.

·         Rod Plank seminar: Rod will be presenting a seminar this spring. He may want to advertise on the web site and newsletter. Discussion about a fee for advertising was inconclusive - web site free but newsletter not. The difficulty was that the newsletter is included on the web site. No decision was made about a fee.

Next meeting:

·         Monday, March 12th at 7:30 p.m.

Meeting adjourned at 9:00 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Diane Kroll, GDCCC Secretary
