2001 International Salon:

ž          Chairman Andy Wims submitted the following report:

I want to thank everyone involved in making the Salon a success. That would not have been possible without many individuals playing a significant role. Although we had about the same number of entries in prints, there was again a drop in the nature and color slide entries.

I am making a few recommendations for the 69th Salon:

o        Move the nature prints under the Print Division that would then read, "color, monochrome & nature." The medals for nature prints would remain the same.

o        In the Color Slide Division add a Creative Color Slide (ccs) section. A submitter could enter the open section (cso) and/or the ccs section. In the creative section, we would add a "PSA Best of Show Medal". Possibly, the "Best of Show Creative" and/or the "Judges Choice Creative" medal(s) would be moved to the new section.

o        In the Nature Slide Division add a Wildlife Nature Slide (wns) section. A submitter could enter the open section (nso) and/or the wns section. In the wildlife section, we would add a "PSA Best of Show Medal" and possibly move the "Best Authenticated Wildlife" to the new wildlife section. There has been some thought for a new medal for wildlife, "Best Bird".

Several Internationals have already implemented #2 and #3 to increase opportunity for an individual to compete and to increase the number of entries. I will discuss the fee structure for single or multiple entries to a division at a later time. After we review our operational costs and the impact of the new postal rates, we will be in a better position to discuss fees.

The Salon catalog has been typed by Judy Yaker and is in the process of review. Judy and Art provided me with a digital file of the medal winners for the slides and prints. I generated the digital pictures to be used for the catalog.

I am assuming the Council will allow me to serve again as chairman for the 69th International. Jim Inkster has agreed to be CS Division chairman. Ron Genaw will not be chairman for prints because of a PSA responsibility he has accepted. We need a new Print Division chairman. I need to verify if the chairman of Stereo and Nature will continue to serve.

Old Business:

ž          Darrell Gulin: The seminar is set for May 18 & 19, 2002 at the Southfield Civic Center Room. A $400 deposit has been paid with a possible additional $400 fee due depending on negotiations. Brochures will be ready for distribution at the year end banquet. Since this is a council fundraiser, all clubs must be prepared to promote and participate in the seminar. Darrell will be featured on the Canon Photo Safari Saturday, October 6 at 9:30 a.m. Tapes of the program will be available through Judy.

New Business:

ž          Nominations for 2nd Vice President and Secretary are needed for 2002-2003 terms.

ž          GDCCC Honors proposals are due in October. Materials are being prepared for club presidents and will be sent out shortly.

ž          End of year trophies are due back to Art Thompson at the November 1 council meeting.

ž          The council membership list needs to be updated. Club presidents are to arrange for member lists, including address, phone and e-mail addresses to be sent/given to Diane. These lists may be e-mailed, mailed or brought to the next council meeting.

ž          It was noted that several clubs are having trouble with inconsistent readings from the new score boxes. Can anything be done? No suggestions were offered except to have judges be more consistent and question scores that seem too high or low based on their own scoring. It was suggested that we get Richard Grubola to present a scoring seminar at one or more clubs.

ž          There was discussion about changing some of the rules for competition. Presidents are to take them to their clubs for discussion. Voting will take place at the next council meeting with enactment of changes to be effective January 2002.

o        Change size limits on digital and commercial prints to 16" x 20" maximum to match current color print sizes.

o        Keep print viewing distance the same for all size prints (consider 8' distance for all). Judges would still be free to move closer to examine any print. This would eliminate having to separate prints into size categories within division.

o        Allow only mounting of prints, no matting. This would greatly reduce the weight for those responsible for transporting to and from competitions (especially end of year).

o        Combine color, commercial and digital prints into one division to be called "Color Print." Monochrome print would remain a separate division.

o        Combine digital slides with color slides. There are very few digital slides being entered.

ž          Next meeting: Thursday, November 1st at 7:30 p.m.

Meeting adjourned at 8:30 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,

Diane Kroll, GDCCC Secretary
